Phoenix, AZ - 66 teams converged in the Valley of the Sun to compete in the 2007 ASA Western Nationals. The Western Region consists of teams from states such as California, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico. High temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, high humidity, thunderstorms (one which cancelled a practice game and had the field submerged within 5 minutes had the girls running for cover, and another cutting the Opening Ceremonies short), being one of a handful of teams to field a roster of strictly 1993 birthdates or younger.
POOL PLAY 7/31 7:00am, Game 1 vs So Cal Sliderz (WIN 4-0) 8/1 7:00am, Game 2 vs Americans (WIN 6-2) With a perfect 2-0 record, the Stompers were the #1 seed in their Pool and started the double elimination bracket play... BRACKET PLAY 8/1 6:00pm, Game 3 vs Coastal Xtreme (WIN 6-2) 8/2 7:00am, Game 4 vs Irvine Sting (LOSS 1-9) 8/2 6:00pm, Game 5 vs Colorado Bruins (WIN 6-2) 8/3 7:00am, Game 6 vs Orange County Dynasty (WIN 9-0) 8/3 6:00pm, Game 7 vs AZ Cats 92 (WIN 7-5) 8/3 8:00pm, Game 8 vs Franchize (WIN 2-1) 8/4 9:00am, Game 9 vs So Cal Storm (WIN 3-0) 8/4 11:00am, Game 10 vs Knock Outs 92 (WIN 4-2) 8/4 6:00pm, Game 11 vs San Diego Thunder (WIN 2-0) 8/4 8:00pm, Game 12 vs Courage (LOSS 1-4) WOW!!! A record of 10-2 for the tournament and out of 66 teams, these ladies earned a Fourth Place finish!!! What an outstanding job by these young ladies... Just to make it more interesting, here are some fun facts: The 2 losses were against the two teams which eventually finished 2nd and 3rd The Stompers opened play everyday, playing in four 7:00am games and one 9:00am game In 2 straight days, the Stompers played the first game in the morning and the last game at night In the last 7 games, there were only 10 players available on the roster Game 10, already starting late, took 2:45 and ended under the International Tie Break Rule There are some that would say a 4th place finish falls short of expectations, but to these girls, the order they finish does not matter as much as the effort they know they made to get there. From the beginning, our organization has always stressed that "Winning is a by product of our hard work, dedication, and desire". This holds true in this situation. Seeing the effort and the attitude the girls had during the week, made them winners from the start. This time last year, there were some girls already home unpacking from Nationals, some were playing in "B" Nationals, and others who did not even play in any post season Thanks to our coaching staff, who have always wanted the girls to realize that they can accomplish anything they want as long as they do it with 100% effort. The long hours of practices and miles driven to tournaments finally paid off and the girls peaked at just the right time. As the girls ended their final game, they lined up on the first base line, faced the stands, and belted out a large, "Thank You!" to all our friends and families. These fans never took to the field, but they were always awake before any of the players and didn't sleep until their daughter was in bed, made sure everyone was always hydrated, traded pins while the girls were playing, defended every girl as if they were their own daughter, cheered them on no matter what the situation, endured the same weather in metal bleachers with usually no cover, and we won't even mention their part as drivers and financial advisors. Thanks also needs to go out to all our sponsors and to those who kept track of us via our website. |
